Utility-scale solar power plants have been proposed for numerous locations throughout the desert Southwest. The prevalence of flat, undeveloped land and abundant direct sunlight makes these locations ideal for solar power. However, utility-scale solar power plants have a large land footprint, requiring from 5 to 10 acres per megawatt of capacity. The large size of these projects and their impact on the desert ecosystem has raised concerns among land managers and environmentalists.
